Pet of the week 10/26/20

Hello everybody and Happy National Pitbull Awareness Day!!!

Its been a bit since the last post (Im sorry :’( ) but this one is sort of a special edition. It is National Pit Bull Awareness Day and in light of that I have decided to pick a very special dog to show case as pet of the week this week. He is a perfect example of the love and dedication of this breed. He is truly man’s (or in this case woman’s) best friend.

A little background on this guy. We don’t know what type of dog he is but we are thinking he has some Pitbull in him along with maybe lab? He was found wondering the road when he was about 6 months old. He was severely emaciated, weak and malnourished. He was brought to Four Paw where Amanda Wells fostered him , taking him into her home he spent his days hanging out with us in the kennel. You could tell all he wanted was to be loved and cared for. One of the girls at the kennel called him Mighty Paws because whenever he ran all you could hear was “THUD THUD THUD” from his paws, which were way too big for his body. One of our clients who brings her dog, Dopey every week for daycare had been looking for a second dog for sometime. She decided to take little Mighty home and introduce him to her other dog. Like fate they got along as if they’d known each other their whole lives. She decided to change his name from Mighty Paws to “Hercules” in honor of his zero to hero transformation. He is now living the high life with a sister he absolutely adores and a mother who loves him completely.

So without further ado, everyone meet Hercules!

Hellooooooo! My name is Hercules and I want to tell you all about me, now where to begin?

From the beginning would probably be a good place to start. One day a looong long time ago I was wondering scared and alone down through the woods. I was following a road in hopes of finding help or food when these humans came along and found me. I didn’t know who they were or if they were friendly, all I know was I was weak and starving. I went with the humans and after getting in their moving transport, they brought me somewhere. It was a place that smelled of dogs…lots of them. They left me at this place with some other humans, humans who fed me , cleaned me up and spoke so sweetly to me. They loved on me whenever I wanted, they made sure I was always warm and comfy. One of them even took me to where they lived. I got to meet some small humans who loved to play with me and cuddle on this thing called a “Couch”? (I know I had never heard of one either) They let me on all of their “Couches” , I got treats whenever I wanted, they even had other dogs I got to sniff and play with!!. My favorite part was at the end of every day when all the humans would gather on the couch and watch the floating pictures. I would lay my head on their lap and drift off knowing I was safe and happy. I stayed with them for quite a while, splitting time between their home and the place filled with dogs. I got so many pets and treats I could hardly keep up! It was a good life. Until one day a different human came, I had seen her every now and then picking up one of the many dogs that visits the dog place. Except, this time she took me home with her to. She took me to her home, there weren’t small humans like last time but there were toys and a bed just for me. There was even another dog who seemed to really really like me ( I really really liked her to). We went for car rides and walks everyday. We got to see so many different people and places together. And at the end of every day I got to lay on the couch with this human and my new sister and watch the floating pictures just like before except this time I knew I was home. I gained my strength back and with that came mischief and energy. Lots and lots of energy. I loved to roll in dirt and then splatter it all over my mom’s nice clean blankets. I would sometimes chew on things I wasn’t supposed to. Apparently you aren’t supposed to eat the couch. Who knew right? Almost every day mom would take my sister and I back to the dog place so we could see my old friends. I have made tons of new friends, I get cuddle with my sister all of the time, and i even get to (lovingly) jump all over the humans that took care of me for what felt like forever. And at the end of every day I get to go home with my new family. Above all I love the fact that I know I will always have a place to call home.

Pet of the week 7/27/20

Hi everyone!

For this weeks POTW it was a difficult decision , because all of your babies deserve the spotlight. We decided this week should be dedicated to Miss Lacy Cole , she keeps things interesting here at Four Paw and we love her for it!

Everyone please meet Lacy Cole!

Hey y’all! My name is Lacy and if there is one thing you should know about me it’s that I love to be the center of attention. All day every day. If you’re not paying attention to me well prepare for a cuteness overload because the only purpose in your life is to love me so I will cuddle you , jump on you and do whatever it takes to get your attention. My mommy also likes to tell everyone i’m picky, which may or may not be true. My mom brings me to Four Paw so i can play with all my doggy friends who are super fun and they love to chase (which is a bonus)! The real reason I love Four Paw so much is because of all the love and pets my human friends give me. If they aren’t paying attention to me or are giving MY pets to another dog (which is blasphemy I tell you), I will bark my head off to tell them what I think about their poor decisions. I like to boss the other dogs around to, I mean the humans love me the most so that makes me the boss right? I love to play in the pool and bark at all my doggy friends to get them to play with me. Four Paw is my home away from home and while I may love it at Four Paw my favorite part of the day is going home and getting my mom's love all to myself.

Pet Of The Week 7/17/20

Hi Everyone!

I know its been a while since we’ve posted. With everything going on this blog has been on a bit of a hiatus. But we are back , with new content and a new Pet Of The Week :)

I hope everyone is staying safe and well during these uncertain times and as always we are so appreciative of all your support and love!

Without further ado , our Pet Of The Week Mr. Mac Zumbro!!!!

Hi my name is Mac AKA Mac Attack, Macky Poo or Maciavelli (whatever the humans decide to call me). I’m going to tell you a bit about my self today. I enjoy running and playing with all of my doggy friends. Some of my best friends at Four Paw are Hershey, Louise and Molly. I recently made a friend named Roscoe, he was super tiny but acted like he was my size so it was ok. I loveee to chase my friends all around the yard if they will let me (which they usually do). My mom brings me to Four Paw whenever her and my daddy are working long hours and I absolutely love it! I get to spend all day with my friends, both human and four legged. I’m very quiet and a little stand-offish when you first meet me, but after I warm up I am the sweetest dog in the history of the world ( according to all my human friends). My favorite thing to do is cuddle up with my human parents after a long day running and playing at Four Paw.

Pet Of The Week 2/17/20

Hi all!

This week we are finally recognizing the queen of Four Paw, Miss Kookie Woods. She has been waiting patiently for this day to come.

Hello,

My name is Kookie. Kookie with a K. I love when my human subjects show me attention. It’s my absolute favorite thing in the world. They give me treats and pets. I have the best life. I come to Four Paw 5 days a week, while my mom is working at Longwood. I am the Queen Bee at Four Paw , I rule with an iron fist and make sure everyone stays in line. I rule my kingdom from a small room in the back so that I may monitor everyone. It has a weird chair like thing and a big machine that runs water in it. No one is allowed in my throne room unless I give them permission (which is normally only given to my human subjects as they give me pets when they come in) My human subjects make sure there is a bed fit for a queen in there at all times. I’m not overly fond of my four legged companions as they tend to be loud and try to bother me in my throne room. I let them know when I don’t appreciate their attitude and would like very much for them to vacate the premises. I like only the finest of toys , and I always…always make sure to come dressed to impress. I have an outfit for every occasion and like to wear a different one every day (One if my favorite designs being Cheetah Print) . My human mother helps me dress in the morning before she escorts me to my kingdom. I’m an older girl but I still have plenty of spunk and I make sure everyone knows it.

Pet of the week 2/03/20

Hi everyone!

This week we are shining some light on sweet Onyx. There is no way we couldn’t introduce her to you as she is one of the sweetest , most loving dogs that stay with us.

Hi! Hello! Halo! Aloha! Hola! My name is Onyx and I love love love love love love the tennis ball (Was that too many loves?) Like if I had to pick between a dog and the tennis ball? Tennis ball…all day everyday. If the tennis ball is the sun i’m the earth , constantly gravitating around it. It does like to hide from me sometimes. It really likes to find its way under the couch. Who knows why? I try to get it out , but normally my human has to get it for me. I like other dogs but i’m definitely more of a people dog. I especially like it when said humans play fetch with me. My mom is the Athletic Trainer for the Longwood Womens Basketball Team. So whenever she goes out of town I get to stay with the girls at Four Paw. They know just how I like my ball thrown and make sure I have toys with me 24/7. They even find the ball for me when it decides to run away. How awesome is that?

Pet of the Week 1/20/20

Hola!

This week we are going to be honoring Hershey! This little ball of energy is so smart and lovable there was no way we couldn’t pick him as pet of the week this week!!

Hi! Hey! Hello! My name is Hershey!!! I love love love to run. Running is my favorite thing in the world, well besides by mom and my bestest pal Mac. My mom brings me to four paw at least a couple times a week to help expend some of the natural Shetland sheepdog energy I have.(Whatever that means)  When i’m out with my friends , I love to play and run with them (and i occasionally try to herd them). When I run no one can catch me , i’m the fastest pup alive. I love being the third wheel. I know what your thinking , but I don’t get why its such a bad thing. The more the merrier right? I just see two dogs playing and I have got to join in. I really like making friends. I get so excited when someone new comes , I always have to greet them. I just love love everyone one.I like to be the center of attention. I’m what you might call a chatterbox , and I use that skill to let everyone know what i think about everything all the time. My buddies & I  do have a tendency to play in mud puddles though. Whenever I do the humans pick me up and put me in this big water contraption. I don’t mind it , but I just don’t understand why? Is it because i’m thirsty? Or maybe to clean all the mud off? No , that’s not it I guess it will forever be a mystery to me.

New Puppy Tips!!!

Happy New Year!!

The holidays have come and gone and I know that means some of us are in kind of an after holiday coma. Whether it be financially , emotionally or mentally the holidays can be extra stressful , they fly by way quicker than we want them to and spit us out in a new year scrambling to get back to daily life.

But a couple of families may have gained themselves an extra member over the holidays which could also be adding a bit of stress. Christmas is the most popular time for people to add puppies to their families!! And if you’re a new dog owner or are even just stressing with this pup because he/she is so different than your last dog , im hoping to help out with a couple of topics new puppy owners may need help with.

Of course if you have any questions or concerns about your pup don’t hesitate to reach out to your local vet or contact us through email or comments and we will do our best to help.

I will also add a couple links with relevant information to the end of this blog for some extra clarification.

First off, there are some key elements needed to help raise and train a puppy.

-Crate : make sure it is fitted to your puppy so they have enough room to turn around, stand up and lay down. You want to make sure not to give them too much room in their crate as they are liable to use one half as a bathroom and the other as their “den” so to speak. This will be absolutely necessary in properly potty training your puppy.

- Collar/Harness and leash: While a collar is most necessary so that you can put their ID tags and Rabies tag on it , a harness a lot of times is a lot easier to help leash train a puppy. Especially if you plan to use a harness when they get older. A good harness for puppy’s especially keen on pulling is an easy walk harness, which has theeash hooked on the front of the harness instead of the back. Another good option for training not to pull is a head collar which helps redirect them when they go to pull.

-Quality Puppy Food: Make sure to get your pup on a good quality puppy food. I recommend if you have a large breed puppy feed them a puppy food specifically for that size dog , as it will have extra supplements to help with a large dogs growth. There are also some foods that are catered to the breed of a dogs as well which may be something that interests you. Some of the Brands that come recommended by vets are Iams, Royal Canin , Hills Science Diet and Purina.

**If you are wondering how much too feed your puppy : something i’ve learned is that you call almost never feed a puppy too much. Their metabolisms are constantly working because they are incredibly active , so you have to give them all the nutrients your puppy needs to grow. Some people feed their puppy 3 times a day just to keep their stomach more balanced and to make sure they are not getting too much at one time , while others feed two times a day. I recommend checking with your vet to see what they recommend for your lifestyle and your puppy’s breed.

- Puppy Pads: Some people use these to help potty train their puppy while others simply use crate training it all depends on what works best for you and the puppy.

- Lots & Lots of toys: Make sure to have plenty of toys of different kinds for your new pup to play as this will help stimulate and keep their mind thinking and learning. Choose puppy appropriate toys, making sure never to get a pup something to hard for them to chew on. One good suggestion to go by is to make sure you can make an indent into the toy with your finger nail. If you can then its safe , if not then it may be too tough for your puppy to chew.

-Ensure your puppy gets all of the necessary vaccinations and deworming necessary.

A lot of breeders will do first deworming & vaccinations before they leave home at 8 weeks old. Before going to your normal vet make sure to have records of all the breeder has done for your puppy so the vet may plan accordingly.

Normally a puppy is vaccinated at 6-8 weeks old for its first set of Vaccines which will be the DHPP ( or Distemper Parvo Vaccine) and will be dewormed at that time as well.

Then the DHPP and deworming will need to be boostered again around 12 weeks (at 12 weeks your puppy can then be vaccinated for Bordetella and Lyme if you so choose) . Your pup will then go in for their last set of vaccinations around 16 weeks, which is when they will get the Rabies vaccine and booster any other vaccines they have been given.

**Veterinarians may differ in vaccination schedule , so check with your normal vet to see what they would be comfortable giving. **

Around 12 weeks your vet will probably recommend you start your puppy on flea/tick and heartworm prevention. This is paramount in keeping your puppy safe throughout its life. They should stay on this prevention throughout the course of their life taking one dose monthly of each.

At 6 months your puppy can be spayed/or neutered , though some vets recommend 12-24 months for extra large breed dogs.

Potty Training: with potty training comes crate training, unfortunately for the first couple of months you should be taking your puppy out on a schedule. A good rule of thumb is that a puppy can hold their bladder for as long as they are in months in hours plus one. So if your puppy is 2 months , they can hold it for 3 hours and so on. Keeping your puppy on a schedule is the best and most efficient way to potty train. So after you feed him/her take your puppy outside and wait until they go to the bathroom. If they don’t , put them back in their crate and take them out again about 15-20 minutes later. The idea is to show them that outside is for bathroom time and inside means fun. If they go , reward them with treats and then they can stay out of their crate. If you catch your puppy going to the bathroom or about to go to the bathroom in the house immediately take them out side and then reward them when they go. NEVER EVER punish your puppy after the fact. Dogs don’t understand what you are punishing them for as it happened 10 minutes ago. All they know is you are yelling at them. Just clean it up and try again with a clean slate next time.

Below are some tips to keep in mind when dealing with puppies:

BE PROACTIVE!!

A good tip with puppies is to always be proactive. If they exhibit a good behavior even without you asking immediately reward them. Reward them every time you see a behavior you want them to learn or repeat.

DONT ROUGH HOUSE!!

I know when we get puppies we want to play and run around with them , which is totally fine. But rough housing , especially using hands is not a good way to play. Especially if you’ve got a large breed puppy. All that rough play is going to lead to is being mouthy , jumping , and a lack of impulse control when they get older. Now that’s not to say you cant play with your puppy , of course you can! Just make sure to use their toys to do so , play tug of war and fetch. Squeak their toys and hide them or throw them around , play interactive games , anything thing to keep their mind working.

REDIRECT!!

If your puppy is ever displaying a behavior you don’t like , redirect them into one you do. If they are biting at your hands or chewing on something they are not supposed to be redirect them to their favorite toy , if they are jumping all over you step into them or ignore them and redirect them into a sit before you pet them. Almost an behavior can be redirected with a toy.

TEACH!!

Start teaching your puppy early! Make sure to teach them their name , come , sit and down at an early age. Especially come. Most puppies will go through a phase when they are around 6 months where they act like they’ve forgotten everything you've ever taught them but trust me they haven’t forgotten. If you train them well when they are younger and stick to it you will have a very well behaved puppy. There are a multitude of trainers and classes out there for those that are interested.

PLAY GAMES!!!

A really good game to play with a puppy is a trade game. Where they have something of value (like a toy or whatever) and you trade it out for something of equal value ( a treat) then immediately give them the toy back. This really helps to eliminate resource guarding especially with people as it teaches them that when something is taken they get something of equal value. You can also play games like look at me , follow me stuff like that. These games will help train your puppy into looking to you instead of the outside world for guidance.

Pet of the week 1/13/20

Hi everyone!!

This week we are going to be honoring our favorite man Godrick. This sweet man is so lovable and amazing we feel he needed some extra attention this week.

Well hello there , my name is Godrick. My favorite thing in the whole world are humans. Any one who gives me love and attention are on the tippy top of my list of favorites. I especially like to lay right in the way of whatever they are trying to do just so they will have to stop and pet or talk to me. ( Don’t tell them that though , I have them trained) I have also tasked myself with keeping the younger dogs in line. Making sure their fun is regulated. Some call me the fun police , I simply call it my duty to keep everyone one safe and relaxed. I also love to lay right under the grooming table so that by the end of the day I smell like different dogs. maybe it camouflages me? Who knows. I mainly only do it so Amanda has to keep petting me and asking me to relocate . (I have her trained to.) I like to play , but my play mainly consists of running around trying to keep up with the young whippersnappers out there. But don’t think I cant. I just choose not to. I am also very tolerant of those young pups who lick me in the mouth. For what reason I have no idea? Young dogs these days make no sense to me. But I digress, I make my rounds to Four Paw twice weekly while my mom is at work. Just to make sure all of my young friends are okay and to see my human ones.
